THE PICTURE BELOW - MICHIGAN TRADESMAN, October 23, 1952 KINDE, MICHIGAN ... The Bean Capital of the World"" Beans for
which Huron County is so justly famous, made their first appearance in the crop records about 1892 when six acres of beans
were grown for market in Brookfield township. In 1895 eight acres were grown in Hume township. Up to 1900 the
beans that were grown were marketed by grocery stores and neighbors. In 1910 there were 20,015 acres of beans and in
1925 the acreage had more than tripled when it reached 75,052. However, the peak year for bean acreage was in 1935,
when it reached 75,351 acres. The elevaters began to handle beans for the farmers in 1900. Up to 1905 most of
the Beans were harvested and threashed by hand. The elevators at Kinde, Michigan in the central part of the county have
for a number of years purchased and shipped more beans than any other one place in the world. During World War I, Huron
County beans sold for an all time high of $12.00 per bushel. During the depression in 1933, they reached an all time low of
about 50 cents per bushel. KINDE VILLAGE COUNCEL
